Project Objective
The Akron-Newstead Senior Citizens Inc., had been serving their community members from the existing Town of Newstead Fire Hall. Due to an increase in anticipated membership, a facility that met the functional and spatial needs of senior citizen activities was desired. Through a Town of Newstead Facilities Planning Study and subsequent meetings with the senior representatives, it was decided to design and construct an addition to the existing Fire Hall facility.

Solution
To create a seamless visual transition from the existing building to the new addition, a glass and brick facade was designed for the front entrance lobby and connecting corridor. The new entrance also serves as main entry into  both the new Senior Center and the Fire Hall’s existing banquet hall. The Senior Center features a community exercise room, an arts and crafts room, a computer and library room, a billiard area, and activity space. The main area is highlighted by a vaulted ceiling and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking adjacent farm land.
