Donald E. Gray
AIA, LEED AP
Don Gray is a licensed architect with over 30 years of experience in complex multi-discipline projects. He is a “relationship oriented” team leader, with extensive experience in projects that involve large groups of stakeholders and involved agencies, particularly in the public sector. Having been a leader on numerous award-winning projects, Don understands that project success is a balanced combination of giving attention to detail while keeping the “big picture” clearly in focus.
As the leader of Wendel’s Architectural Practice Area, Don understands that every design presents its own unique challenges, and each must serve the requirements of the client, the community, and the users who will be affected by it. He leads his team with the knowledge that these buildings will continue to serve their users long after we are gone, providing real utility in the world for generations to come. Addressing the client’s fiscal responsibilities, listening to the needs of the surrounding community, and delivering an efficient building are of utmost importance in his work.

What is your proudest moment?
Actually, it is all of the moments I spend with my grandson. Even though he is only 8 years old, he is such a kind and caring person. He is always thinking of others first and concerned about their welfare and feelings. That is why I call him my “little man”.
If you could pass on a nugget of wisdom to aspiring architects, what would that be?
Truly listen to the client and the people who will use and work at these facilities, and use your talent and experience to design for them, not for yourself.
Most memorable Wendel moment?
The merger of Wendel Engineers and Duchscherer Oberst Design in 2000. That event provided part of the foundation for Wendel to be a “living company” with a national presence and we have been growing ever since.
