ZEV Transition Plan

Sweet Home School District’s ZEV Transition Plan

Sweet Home Central School District is a UPK-12 District located in Western New York State and serves the townships of Amherst and Tonawanda in Erie County. The District has nearly 3,700 students and houses its own transportation fleet. Sweet Home’s fleet consists of sixty-eight (68) total buses – fifty-four (54) large passenger and fourteen (14) small passenger buses (including 4 wheel chair buses).

In October 2019, district residents approved a $39.9 million Capital Improvement project that included nearly $13 million for upgrades to the current Transportation facility as well as six new service bays and lifts and a new fuel island. Work began on the project in earnest in Spring 2021 and called for a redesign and improvement to the building’s parking areas. The District saw this as an opportunity to potentially add infrastructure in advance of the state mandated transition to zero emission vehicles and met with our service provider, National Grid, in Summer 2022.

While National Grid was willing to help us in our transition process, serious conversations could not begin until we had an electrification plan completed. Sweet Home Central School District administration and our Board of Education was determined to explore every opportunity for funding our transition. As such, the District selected Wendel Companies to facilitate our plan primarily because of their extensive work in the area and their solid and long-standing relationships with National Grid and funding sources from organizations such as the New York State Energy and Research Development Authority (NYSERDA).
