Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper has secured the Greenway Ecological Fund funding to undertake an ambitious living shoreline restoration project at the North Tonawanda Botanical Gardens. The primary objective of this initiative is to transform the existing landscape into a more natural and self-sustaining ecosystem. This will be accomplished through the use of natural materials, a diverse array of native plants, and innovative bioengineering techniques.
The restoration aims to create a smooth transition between land and water, enhancing the environment and fostering valuable habitats across aquatic, riparian, and upland areas. Strategic incorporation of green infrastructure and bioretention elements will address runoff issues, helping to cleanse and manage stormwater more effectively.
The anticipated outcomes of the restored shoreline include more natural protections against erosion, the establishment of fish spawning and resting habitats along Tonawanda Creek, and the creation of an effective riparian buffer. This buffer will help regulate water temperatures and support a rich diversity of wildlife. Additionally, the project will enhance water quality in the creek through natural means, allow for public access within the area, and ultimately improve the overall sustainability of the shoreline environment.
