During rain and snow events, stormwater is generated by runoff from the neighborhoods where we work and play, and can adversely affect our waterways. By managing this runoff, flooding, erosion, and pollution can be reduced. Wendel can help with all aspects of managing stormwater quantity and quality, including master planning, stormwater pollution prevention, permits and inspection, and more.
We’re experienced in all aspects of managing stormwater quality and quantity, including flood control, which is a critical issue in many municipalities. We’ve designed numerous cost effective flood mitigation strategies for both small (individual sites) and large (regional watershed) areas.
Using green infrastructure for sustainable solutions.
The Iroquois Drive Reconstruction project provides safer access to the campus for the nearly 11,000 daily vehicular commuters including a full-depth pavement reconstruction, establishment of a pedestrian and bicycle multiuse path, stormwater treatment and improvements, and energy efficient street lighting.
We implement sustainable stormwater management practices that meet local, federal, and state regulations and pollution policies. Our designs incorporate new technology and green infrastructure such as permeable pavement, bioretention swales, TMDL, and gray water re-use and irrigation systems that effectively direct rainwater to the surrounding landscape.
The term “green infrastructure” encompasses a wide range of tools and techniques designed to balance human infrastructure needs with the impact they have on the natural environment. The basic thinking is to design with nature, not against it. In a traditional infrastructure project, this type of problem is addressed by diverting flow to buried treatment boxes.
This typically results in an expensive, difficult-to-maintain infrastructure project, a disrupted environment, and several manholes placed throughout the landscape. With green infrastructure, the goal is to keep as much of this water out of the sewer system as possible, naturally filtering the water with plant life, slowing down flows, and directing stormwater through constructed landscape features.
