Wendel led the design of the Arbor Place Women’s Health Facility, created to support recovery for women and women with children impacted by substance use and mental health disorders through a trauma informed, person centered approach. Designed as a women only environment, the facility reduces triggers and creates a safer setting where individuals can focus on healing. The building’s location and orientation promote privacy and safety while maintaining a strong connection to nature. Natural views and daylight provide a calming atmosphere, and outdoor spaces such as walking paths, a spiritual garden, and a pond with a fountain extend this sense of renewal beyond the building.

Inside, the program supports individual and group therapy, pharmacotherapy, and residential living while balancing privacy, staff visibility, and comfort. Therapy spaces are tailored to program needs, with smaller rooms for intimate sessions and larger areas for group interaction and support. Family friendly layouts create a welcoming environment for women with children, reinforcing Arbor Place’s mission to restore dignity and self worth.

Design strategies draw on principles of neuroarchitecture and evidence based behavioral healthcare, incorporating natural light, biophilic elements, ergonomic furnishings, and durable, soothing materials to reduce stress and promote wellness. Acoustic treatments and intuitive wayfinding minimize environmental stressors, creating a setting that feels therapeutic and supportive rather than institutional.
