New Road Rehabilitation

The rehabilitation of New Road provided wider lanes, modern drainage, and improved stormwater performance, with Wendel providing guidance to the County from early design through construction.

New Road Rehabilitation

Client

Erie County Department of Public Works

Location

Buffalo, NY

Wendel is providing engineering services for a county-funded project to rehabilitate approximately 3.5 miles of New Road (CR 186) from the Niagara County line to Dodge Road. The corridor is a narrow two-lane roadway with little to no shoulder and deep, open drainage, which has been challenged by growing traffic. The work includes pavement rehabilitation to improve ride quality, roadway widening to add paved shoulders, conversion of the open ditch system to a closed drainage system, and a coordinated partial waterline replacement identified as a Town betterment.

Stormwater management plays a central role in the project. Wendel is preparing a comprehensive Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan that meets the requirements of the New York State SPDES General Permit for construction activities. The new closed drainage approach introduces treatment practices that support both water quality and quantity, helping the corridor function more reliably during typical weather events and during heavier storms.

Project development brings together the assessment of the existing roadway, the creation of conceptual alternatives, and full preliminary and final design, along with close coordination with utilities, property owners, and the community. Wendel’s services continue through bidding, construction administration, and observation, supporting the County from early planning through delivery.
