Erie County Department of Public Works engaged Wendel to provide engineering services for a drainage system upgrade and roadway rehabilitation along Lakeshore Road between Bennett Beach Park and Evans Town Park in the Town of Evans. This County-funded effort is closely coordinated with the Lakeshore Shoreline Trail Phase II project, a federally funded pass-through initiative also being delivered by Wendel. Improvements to the roadway and drainage system are essential before construction of the next phase of the trail can proceed.
The project includes the design and installation of a new storm sewer system that will collect and convey roadway and future trail runoff along the corridor. The system outlets to both Big Sister Creek and Lake Erie at Hickory Road, providing a controlled and resilient approach to drainage in an area that experiences varied weather and shoreline conditions. Roadway rehabilitation spans approximately one mile from the Evans Town Park entrance road to Bennett Beach Road, using a mix of mill and overlay, full-depth asphalt pavement recycling, and targeted full-depth reconstruction to restore the pavement structure.
Wendel’s work covers topographic survey, development of design options, detailed roadway and storm sewer engineering, and preparation of bid documents using the Erie County front-end. Services continue through bidding and award, followed by construction administration and observation. The project reflects a collaborative effort between County agencies and community partners to prepare the corridor for both improved daily use and future trail access.
