Town of Newfane Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades

Wastewater Engineering Services for the Town of Newfane, NY

Wendel has served as Town Engineer for the Town of Newfane, New York, for more than 50 years, building a trusted partnership shaped by consistency, responsiveness, and a shared understanding of the Town’s infrastructure. Our work reflects a steady commitment to helping the community maintain reliable, resilient wastewater systems while planning thoughtfully for what comes next. Over time, we have supported the wastewater treatment plant, pump stations, and sanitary sewer system through preliminary engineering, environmental review and SEQR compliance, design, and construction phase services. This has included development of the 1.6 MGD activated sludge wastewater treatment plant, upgrades to solids dewatering and chemical systems, and ongoing improvements to pump stations and collection infrastructure. Through efforts like the Town’s Inflow and Infiltration Program and CDBG-funded sewer improvements, these projects continue to strengthen system performance for a community of approximately 10,000 residents.

SCADA System Design and Implementation

As part of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements Project, Wendel led the expansion and modernization of the facility’s SCADA system, focusing on improving day-to-day operations and providing staff with clearer insight into how the plant operates. Built around Allen-Bradley PLCs, the system uses remote I/O panels distributed across key areas to bring both new and existing processes onto a single, coordinated platform. From headworks through filtration, it connects screening, clarification, aeration, sludge handling, chemical feed, and dewatering to support consistency without adding complexity.

A fiber and copper-based Ethernet network ties the system together, linking process equipment with operator interfaces across the facility. With human-machine interfaces and thin clients placed where they are most useful, operators can monitor conditions, respond to alarms, and manage operations whether in the control room or on the floor. Clear, practical alarm management strategies help keep the team focused on what matters most. The result is a system that feels intuitive to use while improving reliability, simplifying maintenance, and supporting long-term performance.

Municipal Funding Support

Wendel also supports the Town of Newfane in securing funding to advance wastewater infrastructure improvements, helping align project needs with available resources. Our team has assisted the Town in obtaining support through programs such as Community Development Block Grants, NYSEFC water infrastructure funding, EFC hardship and low-interest financing, NYSERDA programs, USDA Rural Development funding, and the New York State Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative (REDI). This coordinated approach helps move projects forward in a way that is both technically sound and financially responsible for the community.
