Blacksburg Transit Multi Modal Transfer Facility

The Virginia Tech Multi-Modal Hub enhances campus mobility by consolidating transit, pedestrian, and bicycle access into a single, accessible location. The 12,000-square-foot facility, paired with 18 bus slips, houses offices for University and transit staff, public waiting areas, restrooms, and a dedicated bike hub and repair shop. Designed in a Gothic style, the building complements the surrounding historic campus architecture while providing modern functionality.

Innovation is evident in the facility’s transportation infrastructure. Bus slips feature permanent canopies with Wi-Fi, charging stations, and direct connectivity to campus security. Four slips include battery-electric charging, with additional in-ground inductive charging planned for future use. Advanced energy modeling guided the building’s placement and orientation, maximizing energy efficiency and long-term performance.

The hub improves regional mobility by connecting local transit, long-haul buses, and bicycle and pedestrian networks, providing a seamless experience for students, staff, and community users. Outdoor gathering spaces and shared-access areas create inclusive environments that foster engagement across campus and the surrounding community.

Complex site conditions required careful planning, including a 100-year floodplain, existing underground utilities, and varied topography. Innovative grading solutions enabled ADA-compliant access throughout the site, while a busy intersection was replaced with a roundabout and two bus transfer loops were added to streamline operations. Complete street features enhanced safety for pedestrians and cyclists. By addressing these challenges and exceeding performance and sustainability goals, the Multi-Modal Hub provides a durable, community-focused model for modern campus transit infrastructure.
