As the first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Central Virginia, the Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC) Pulse serves as a vital connection between destinations throughout the City of Richmond and Henrico County. The Pulse enhances travel times, increases service frequency, and offers a range of passenger amenities, including environmentally friendly compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, level-boarding platforms, real-time bus arrival information, passenger lean rails and benches, and totem bus arrival indicator lights complemented by CCTV and emergency phones.
Wendel was engaged as part of an experienced design team responsible for station design, public outreach coordination, and station site selection. The project commenced with the development of a comprehensive public engagement approach to ensure community involvement throughout the process. This began with a station charrette involving key stakeholders, presenting two station design alternatives for public input and selection. This collaborative outreach occurred alongside the detailed analysis and finalization of the locations for the twenty-six stations along the corridor. The project, funded through the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (VDRPT), reached completion in July 2018.
