The Chautauqua Institution is a cultural/arts-focused destination for people from all over the world. They are also leaders in environmental initiatives and are dedicated to improving the water quality of Chautauqua Lake which, in 2003, was listed by New York State as “impaired waters” under the requirements of the U.S. Clean Water Act. Wendel was given the opportunity to spearhead several measures to preserve this natural resource.
The Odland Plaza focal project created a major pedestrian gathering plaza and gateway at the main entry point of the newly re-constructed Chautauqua Amphitheater. Brick seatwalls and large curved benches were incorporated as amenities in keeping with adjacent architecture of the adjacent historic library. Uniquely, a paver inlay incorporated the historic Miller Bell Tower logo and an ornamental drainage grate simulates the face of the clock.
