Wendel was retained for the Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino (SBCC) project, Buffalo’s first world-class gaming and entertainment facility. This fast-track, phased project was led by the Seneca Gaming Corporation, SOSH Architects and Hnedak Bobo Group. Wendel, on behalf of the Seneca Gaming Corporation, served as the prime consultant leading the following initiatives:

  • Environmental Assessments (NEPA and SEQRA) for the acquisition of the proposed 9 acre parcel and former Fulton Street Right of Way
  • Geotechnical and environmental site investigations
  • Existing building and utility demolition, and environmental remediation design
  • Boundary, topographic and utility surveys
  • Traffic studies and utility impact reports
  • Conceptual site and ROW improvement plan preparation and facilitation of the permitting and approval process with the City of Buffalo

Wendel was then retained by SOSH Architects for a $333 million casino and hotel. After the economic downturn in 2008, the extravagant project was put on hold and was ultimately abandoned for a more economical version. The plans for SBCC were revisited and redesigned to reflect a smaller, $120 million budget, excluding a hotel. Wendel was retained by Hnedak Bobo Group as structural and civil engineer on the SBCC. Wendel had the idea to reuse the previously erected (and rusted) steel, which accounts for 95% of the final structure. The new parking garage utilizes foundations from the 2006 SOSH project design to help reduce costs.
