Project builds upon previous studies like the Shoreline Trail Extension Plan and the US Army Corps of Engineers Smokes Creek project to transform the former Bethlehem Steel Industrial Property into a vibrant public park on the shores of Lake Erie. This 100-acre site, once integral to a steel production facility, closed in 1982, led to ongoing discussions about cleanup and remediation.

The remediation process involves clearing, remediating, and capping the site, with goals including understanding its industrial past, reconstructing natural landscapes, limiting future digging depths, and providing visitor access to the water through overlooks and pathways.

The park’s design principles focus on community access, natural habitats, heritage interpretation, and sustainability, featuring elements like a Shoreline Trail Extension, flex lawn/event space, natural play areas, gathering spaces, high point overlooks, and a waterfront promenade.

The phased approach includes initial developments such as shoreline trail extensions, vehicular access roads, natural playspaces, and pathway installations, with future phases considering features like a rubblemound jetty, expanded park roads, a dog park, an eco-center, and habitat expansions, contingent on funding and community support.

Overall, the project aims to create an accessible, inclusive, and environmentally friendly public park that offers recreational and educational opportunities while honoring the site’s unique industrial history.
