Wendel was selected by NYPA to develop decarbonization plans for seven of the fifteen highest-emitting facilities in New York State, including Stony Brook University. NYPA also selected Wendel to lead the test well drilling program for all fifteen facilities. Our familiarity with Stony Brook’s campuses made us particularly well-positioned for this assignment. With an office located just minutes from Stony Brook, our team has a long-standing working relationship with the University and a strong understanding of its infrastructure, operations, and energy priorities.
Wendel has completed several successful projects at Stony Brook, including installing new LED lighting fixtures and controls across the exterior parking fields and garages surrounding the Health Sciences Center. For this project, our services spanned the full project lifecycle, conducting comprehensive energy audits and savings analyses, preparing detailed design documents, managing the bidding process, overseeing construction, and completing start-up and commissioning.
These assignments provided valuable insight into the University’s facilities and helped build a technical foundation for our decarbonization planning work. As part of the decarbonization plan, Wendel performed a comprehensive evaluation of energy systems across all campuses, focusing on conservation opportunities and the electrification of fossil fuel-based systems. The study included a full life-cycle cost analysis supported by key performance indicators, including avoided future capital costs, incentives, the social cost of carbon, maintenance impacts, and Inflation Reduction Act rebates. By integrating these financial and operational KPIs into a detailed cash flow model, Wendel developed feasible and actionable strategies for electrification and energy reduction. The result is a multi-year roadmap that enables Stony Brook University to make informed, financially sound decisions as it advances its long-term decarbonization goals
