Williams Road Pump Station

Improving system resiliency with two new 10 MDG vertical turbine pumps, new 800 kW diesel engine emergency generator and associated improvements.

Williams Road Pump Station

The Niagara County Water District (NCWD) was established in 1958 and supplies water to 12 towns and several villages in Niagara County, serving a population of approximately 150,000. Wendel has served as the District Engineer for several decades. After completing a Vulnerability Assessment and developing a Capital Improvements Program, a project was identified for the Williams Road Pump Station.

Wendel provided the preliminary planning, design development and construction support services for the rehabilitation of the 44 MGD Pump Station. This project was an important part of the NCWD’s system resiliency in emergency scenarios. The intent of the project was to enable this station to be reliably used as a backup in the event that the Water Filtration Plant or High Service Pump Station were out of service.

The project involved demolition of four existing vertical turbine pumps and installation of two new vertical turbine pumps. New check valves and butterfly valves were installed. Modifications were made to the existing piping and insulation, structural support pads and asbestos abatement was completed. Mechanically, exhaust fans, unit heaters, louvers and dampers were replaced. Electrically, modifications were made to the existing station’s power and electrical equipment including replacement of the switchgear, transformers, panelboards. CCTV improvements were made and a new emergency generator and automatic transfer switch were installed. Field vibration testing was completed on the vertical turbine pumps.
