The portion of Young Street between Main Street and Broad Street has been closed to traffic to improve pedestrian connection between the Central Business District and Gateway Harbor. This project’s objective is to enhance public access to the City of Tonawanda’s unique waterfront assets.

The project area encompasses the only location in Western and Central New York where two major waterways, their related bike trails and amenities, and a central business district meet. The improvements will capitalize on existing opportunities to increase visual connections and bring people out and over the water for more intimate engagement.
Among the many improvements, a timber frame pavilion will host concerts, promote community events and house the City’s portable ice rink in the winter to promote year round usage.

This project is in compliance with the goals stated in the City’s Local Waterfront Revitalization Program by enhancing public usage and amenities allowing residents and visitors to take full advantage of the City’s waterfront. The new facilities will support tourism, promote connectivity to the downtown business district, and drive economic development.
