Greater Hartford Transit District (GHTD)

Paratransit Operations & Maintenance Facility

The Greater Hartford Transit District (GHTD) previously operated out of a leased facility. A new facility was needed to provide improved maintenance and operation of the paratransit fleet and to accommodate diesel, gas and fleets that run on alternative fuels/CNG.

In collaboration with GHTD and Gregg Wies Gardner Architects, Wendel designed a new maintenance and operations facility that includes a separate administration area. This area features a training room, dispatch, reservations and scheduling, driver’s break room, management offices and more. The unique space overlooks the maintenance area and features an open ceiling industrial concept with exposed ductwork and clerestory windows that provide daylight.

Prior to designing the maintenance area, Wendel’s engineers and architects conducted an immersion process – observing workflow, doing a tool inventory and interviewing staff. The new maintenance area features four bays, storage area, parts room, mechanic’s room, wash bay with water/oil separator, parking for at least 125 vehicles and a fueling and service lanes under a canopy. The maintenance facility is CNG compliant.

Construction began in the summer of 2015 and the project was completed on schedule and the owner occupied the space in August of 2017.
