Waterfront Park Design/Brownfields Redevelopment

Landscape Architect / Site Planner for this important Brownfields Redevelopment project along the Industrialized Buffalo River in the City’s Historic First Ward. The new park and riverfront promenade was completed in the summer of 2012, and provides the community with public greenspace, park amenities and new access to the Buffalo River. Within the Industrial Heritage Corridor, the park provides interesting opportunities for viewing the historic Grain Elevators within the area. Two unique features to this site include incorporating an actual metal “Ice Boom” into the pedestrian gateway arch into the park, and the re-use of huge medina sandstone slabs which were discovered on-site into interpretive sign panels highlighting the history of the site and surrounding community. The new park also incorporated many sustainable elements such as rain gardens, native plantings, permeable brick pavers and structural soils. Other park highlights include a new boat storage (which is reminiscent of a historic boat club which sat near the site, and historic waterfront museum building, large open “events” lawn, kayak launch, and numerous seating opportunities.

NOTE: Dean Gowen, Landscape Architect with Wendel, prepared this plan prior to joining the firm.
