Mutual Riverfront Park & Promenade

Brownfields Redevelopment / Riverfront Park Design

Transformative brownfields redevelopment project along the industrialized Buffalo River in the City’s historic First Ward. The new park and riverfront promenade provides the community with much needed greenspace and public access to the Buffalo River. The park provides interesting opportunities for viewing Buffalo’s historic and iconic Grain Elevators within the area. Unique features to this site include incorporating an actual metal “Ice Boom” into the pedestrian gateway entrance into the park, and the re-use of huge medina sandstone slabs which were discovered on-site into interpretive sign panels highlighting the history of the site and surrounding community. The new park also incorporated many sustainable elements such as rain gardens, native plantings, permeable brick pavers and structural soils. Other park highlights include a new boat storage (which is reminiscent of the original historic boat club which sat near the site), and historic waterfront museum building, large open “events” lawn, kayak launch, and numerous seating opportunities.
