Regional Walkability Improvement Program

Walkability Audit and Action Plan

Wendel led a team of five firms to conduct the Regional Walkability Improvement Plan. This effort resulted in action plans to improve pedestrian safety, accessibility, convenience and comfort in 10 municipalities in the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region. The communities ranged from small villages to a neighborhood in the City of Rochester. For each municipality, the consultant team conducted a day- long walk audit with a diverse group of stakeholders from the community.

The audit consisted of a preliminary presentation to set the context and educate participants on how to assess their communities. The group then convened to develop specific recommendations for how to improve the walkability of their community. The action plans summarized major recommendations and provided guidance for how to implement the plans. An explicit goal of the audits and plans was building local capacity and enthusiasm for moving forward with implementation of the recommendations.
